Access into the Chancellor Paterson Library:
- When entering The Chancellor Paterson Library, accessibility ramps are provided at the main entrance.
- Enter or exit the Library from the ground floor via the tunnel.
- Elevators in The Chancellor Paterson Library provide access to all floors.
- Wheelchair accessible washrooms are located on all floors in the southeast corner of The Chancellor Paterson Library.
- Wheelchair-accessible water fountains are available on all floors of The Chancellor Paterson Library.
- Parking spaces designated for persons with disabilities are available close to The Chancellor Paterson Library. Contact the University Security Office in UC 1016 or call (807) 343-8569 to inquire about specific locations and special parking stickers.
- Accessible study spaces for students in wheelchairs are located on the Main, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Floors. Please enquire with Library staff for availability and locations.

Accessible Computer and Assistive Technology
An accessible computer is available for students to use in study room LI 1007 on the main floor of Chancellor Paterson Library. To reserve this computer, please either email circdesk@lakeheadu.ca, call (807) 343-8225, or visit the Services Desk.
The following accessible features and software are included:
- Large monitor, high contrast screen, enlarged icons and cursor.
- Kurzweil 3000 - Users can upload a word or PDF document into Kurzweil and have it read aloud. The dialect, language, reading speed, and voices can be altered to suit user preferences.
- Kurzweil Read the Web - An additional function of Kurzweil that has been added to the Google browser. It offers many of the same functions as the desktop version of Kurzweil 3000 with no uploading involved.
- NVDA - This program enables the computer to talk to its user. The computer will briefly describe whatever the cursor touches (icons, apps, tools, etc.) to assist those with visual disabilities.
- Windows 11 dictation - To activate, press the Windows logo key + H on the keyboard and a dictation icon will appear at the bottom of the screen.
- Microsoft dictation - In Word, click on the microphone icon in the home ribbon to get started.
- Helperbird - This extension has been added to Google Chrome. It provides useful functions such as accessible font, line spacing, colours, and voice typing.
- Glean - A multipurpose note taking tool. (This is only available for students who were granted Glean accounts by SAS.)

Circulation Services
All students can take advantage of the following services:
- Renewals and holds on library materials can be done online or by telephone.
- You can “request” from the library catalogue and library staff will retrieve material from the shelves. Depending on timing and staff availability, retrieval may be immediate or may take up to 24 hours.
- Request from the library catalogue for items to be sent to an alternative library.
The following services are available to persons with disabilities by making arrangements with library staff. Call (807) 343-8225 to arrange:
- Loan periods for reserve materials can be extended under special circumstances. Persons with disabilities can arrange to have another individual check out library material on their behalf. The individual will need to present a letter of authorization and the person's ID card.
