Education Collections (Orillia & Thunder Bay Campuses):

Print and Ebook Collections:

On both the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses the Education Library’s print and ebook monograph collections include academic and professional titles on all aspects of teaching from Kindergarten to Grade 12 . On both campuses, this collection also supports the Master of Education and Phd in Education Studies programs. For both Thunder Bay and Orillia, this collection includes foundational topics such as: educational law, classroom management, lesson planning, assessment, educational psychology, child development, social justice in education, diversity and inclusivity, Indigenous education and research methods. Considerable effort is made to collect books with practical applications for the primary/junior level teaching subject areas (ie Mathematics and Language Arts) and for the intermediate/senior level teachable subjects on both campuses. The print collections at both locations are supplemented by an extensive e-book collection of titles in all subject areas. These ebooks are available through individual title purchases and through these ebook collections: SpringerLink Books, University Press Scholarship Online, Scholars Portal Books and the Association of Canadian University Presses. Both print and ebook titles can be located by searching Omni, the library's search tool.

K-12 Approved Textbooks

This collection consists of textbooks currently approved for use in Ontario classrooms and listed on the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Trillium List. Also included are teacher guides and approved student materials. On both campuses, the Trillium list is regularly monitored and new updates are purchased to update the textbook collection. The textbook collection is reviewed regularly and expired textbooks are relocated to each campus’ Historical Textbook Collection when appropriate.

Children/Young Adult Literature Collection

Both library locations maintain a strong collection of Children’s picture books and juvenile fiction (Young Adult/Teen) titles. On both campuses this collection is very popular and highly used and offers children’s stories that can be used for introducing and teaching many subjects in the curriculum. Both locations offer children’s stories on social justice topics such as diversity, bullying, gender identity, self-esteem, families, immigration and multiculturalism, character development as well as an excellent collection of mentor texts for teaching writing skills. This collection is supplemented by children’s ebook databases including BookFlix and Tumblebook Library.

Both Education Libraries offer an extensive collection of Indigenous Children’s literature including children’s picture books, chapter books, non-fiction titles and children’s books in Indigneous languages such as Objiway, OjiCree, Metis and Inuktitut . Many of these titles are curated and organized, by subject, on this library guide entitled Indigenous Education K-12 .

Non Fiction Juvenile Collection

This collection, also available at both library locations, includes juvenile non-fiction books arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification. This collection provides books with factual information on the various subjects that are included in the Ontario curriculum.
This collection was recently supplemented with two new non-fiction ebook collections: Britannica K-12 and Crabtree Digital which can be accessed on the Education Library site, click on Ebook Collections.

Curriculum Documents/Ministry of Education Documents

Students on both campuses have access to the most current Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum and resource documents in print (where possible) and online.

Kits/Media Resources Collection

The Library’s print collections are supplemented by a collection of kits with hands-on materials to enhance teaching. This includes materials such as mathematics, language arts and science manipulatives, posters, maps, DVDs, puppets, guided reading packs, models, games, musical instruments and language learning materials. Kits are also organized by subject and listed on the P/J Teaching Resources guides and on the I/S Teaching Resources guides on the Education Libraries site.

Journals

Education students on both campuses have access to a strong journal collection in education and related subjects. The Library offers access to the fulltext of Education journals through a direct subscription to Ebsco’s Education Source. In addition to this subscription, the Library provides access to a number of collections of electronic journals through participation in the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and consortial subscriptions through the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL). Included are suites of electronic journals and searchable full-text databases such as Sage Journals Online, Wiley-Blackwell, Project Muse, Taylor and Francis Journals Online and JSTOR.
